Working space is the additional space provided between the edge of the excavation and the footing for the ease of labor movement for fixing, removing shuttering boards, pouring of concrete, and compaction of concrete using a vibrator.
In this article, we shall discuss the size of the working space with examples.

Size of Working Space in Excavation
The size of the working space depends on the depth of excavation.
1. Shallow Foundation
The excavation depth less than 600 mm or 2 ft, is considered shallow excavation. For shallow excavation, no working space is required.
2. Deep Foundation
2.1 Depth up to 3 Meter
For the excavation of depth up to 3 m, a working space of 600 mm shall be added on all four sides of the footing edge.
2.2 Depth more than 3 Meter
For the excavation of depth beyond 3 m, working space of 600 mm + 50 mm (for every 1 meter) shall be added on all four sides of the footing edge.
Example 1:
Size of the Footing – 3 m x 2.4 m
Depth of the Footing – 2.5 m
Excavation Size -
= (3+0.6)m X (2.4+0.6)m …….. for depth up to 3m
Excavation Size = 3.6 m x 3 m
Example 2:
Size of the Footing – 5.2 m x 6 m
Depth of the Footing – 5 m
Excavation Size -
= (5.2+(0.6+ …….. for depth up to 3 m
= (5.2+(0.6+0.05+ …….. for depth from 3 m to 4 m
= (5.2+(0.6+0.05+0.05))m …….. for depth from 4 m to 5 m
= (5.2+(0.6+0.05+0.05))m x (6+(0.6+0.05+0.05))m
= (5.2+0.7)m x (6+0.7)m
Excavation Size = 5.9 m x 6.7 m
