    A lintel is a horizontal member that has been placed across an opening to support the structure above it.

    An Arch is a structure which is constructed to span across an opening. This, usually, consists of small wedge-shaped units, joined together with mortar.

    The main function of arch or lintel is to support the loads of a portion of the wall above the openings and to transmit such load to ends of walls/ piers/ columns over; they are supported.

    Lintels are easy to construct, but for arch, exceptional centering or formwork is required.

    However, arches are mainly used when loads are heavy; span is more, and special architectural appearance is required.

    CONCRETE CANCER – The phenomena in which extensive expansion of concrete occurs and may lead to the total disruption and disintegration of concrete is called concrete cancer. This process is popularly known as Alkali – Aggregate Reaction.

    CAUSE – This phenomenon occurs due to the reaction between Alkalis in cement and silica in aggregate. This reaction results in extensive pop-outs and cracking in a fairly closed pattern of concrete, a year or more after the concrete has been cast, and further leads to concrete cancer.

    PREVENTION –

    • BY SELECTING NON REACTIVE AGGREGATE – Non – reactive aggregates can be identified by chemical test, mortar bar test and petrographic examination.

     

    • BY USING LOW ALKALI CEMENT – CEMENT WITH ALKALI LESS THAN 0.6% SHOULD BE USED.

     

    • BY AIR ENTRAINING AGENTS – The alkali – silica gel imparts osmotic pressure over the set concrete and further this osmotic pressure is main cause of cracks. but when air entraining agents are added, they absorb osmotic pressure and, resultantly, control the expansion.

     

    • BY CONTROLLING MOISTURE – the old concrete should not be allowed top come in water contact. Apply mortar amalgamated with water proofing agents to control the moisture in concrete.

     

    • BY ADDING PUZZOLANAS – the cause of reaction is particular proportion and fineness of silica but when fly ash or surkhi is added, the particular proportion and fineness of silica is disturbed and aggregates do not react.

    The different types of Welding processes in steel structures are as follows:-

    1. Stud Welding:- It involves the electric process of welding a fastener on a metal base by heating both the components with an arc.

    2. Flux Core Welding:- this involves a consumable tubular electrode containing a flux and a constant voltage welding power supply. It’s A portable and fast welding process, and less-skilled workers can easily undergo this.

    3. Shield metal arc welding (SMAW):- it involves a consumable fixed-length electrode covered with a flux, and an electric power source is used to weld two metals together. After the completion of this process, mineral coating flux Of electrode disintegrates and releases a gas Commonly known as Shielding gas, which saves joint from unfavorable atmospheric conditions.

    Hey, To solve the inclined trusses, Methods of joints is the appropriate method. With the help of this, one can easily identify the force in respective member of truss.

    But before solving the truss, some points should be kept in mind and these are listed below :-

    1. If two members are meeting at joint, with no external force acting on them, then forces in both the members will be zero.

    2. If the magnitude of force will come positive then force will be considered as Tensile And if magnitude of force will come negative then force will be considered Compressive.

    3. If two members are collinear then force in the third member ,connected but not in straight line with two members, will be zero: F3 = zero
