    Accelerators are admixtures that can be added in concrete during mixing to accelerate the hardening of concrete or gaining the initial strength. It is very useful when there is a time constraint, and you need to erect the structure as fast as possible. It is also useful for colder reasons where the setting time of concrete is low, which can be increased using the accelerator.

    Retarders also knew as water reducers, are admixture to reduce the water-cement ratio without affecting slump value. It is used when high strength concrete is required, which can be achieved by reducing the water-cement ratio, which in turn increases the slump value and hence not workable, so by using readers, this problem can be solved easily. Retarders also reduce the setting time of concrete and hence are ideal to be used for mass concreting or in a very hot climate to overcome the heat of hydration, which can result in cracks.

     

    Gypsum is added into cement to slow down the hydration process while the addition of water to it. It allows the mixture to be workable for more time periods.

    Civil engineering the oldest known engineering of the world. And hence it is related to everything. The question you have asked has different views from different people. Here I have listed career options as per different interests.

    Career for those who want to work in the core construction area

    You can go for Designing (Structural design)

    You can join different consultants such as Geotechnical consultants, quality control consultant, etc.

    You can also find the above domains in big construction companies itself.

    You can choose specific roles where you are good at such as surveying

    Career for those who want to build their career in Roads and Highways

    You can join a company which is into road construction

    You can go to traffic engineering

    Career for those who want to build their career in environmental engineering

    You can join a company for water treatment

    You can go for wastewater treatment

    You can also go for fecal sludge management

    Career for those who want to build their career in research

    You can do an M.Tech and then Ph.D. from a reputed college, where you can do research for new materials, methods and much more, Most of the people interested in this work as a faculty member in a college and simultaneously do research works.

    Career for those who want to build their career in Construction Management

    You can be a planning engineer, site execution engineer, etc if you do a construction management course or have some experience in the construction site.

    In construction management, the float is the available time for which an activity be delayed without delaying the total project duration while working on the Critical Path Method for scheduling.

    You can use the following formulae for finding float in general.

    Float = Time Available – Time Required

    There are majorly two types of float. They are:-

    1. Total Float
    2. Free Float

    Total Float is the excess time available to an activity without affecting the project duration.

    Total Float of an activity = Late Start time – Early Start Time or Late Finish Time – Early Finish time

    Free Float is the excess time available to an activity without affecting the early start of the succeeding activity.

    Free Float = Early Start – Early Finish

    While most of the time these two types of float are extensively used, there are two other types they are

    1. Interferring Float – It is the amount of time available to an activity to delay its early start time, without affecting the project duration.
    2. Independent Float – it is the available time for which an activity can be delayed without affecting the early start of the succeding activity and the allowable delay of any precedding activity.

    SOR, i.e., Schedule of Rates, also known as DSR, i.e., District Schedule of Rates. It is a document released by Public Works Departments for every district.     SOR, i.e., Schedule of Rates, also known as DSR, i.e., District Schedule of Rates. It is a document released by Public Works Departments for every district. It consists of many tables for different activities in construction, such as Concreting, Earthwork, Steelwork, etc. and there different methods and the resources used for that activity and its cost. You will also get an overall price for the activity per unit. The schedule of rates also includes different types of machinery and equipments used and its cost if it is being used in that district.

    Note: SOR is not mandatory. It is just to explain the basic rates. The market rate can be a little different from them for any resource.

    The following is a screenshot from SOR Delhi for concreting activity with 1:1.5:3 below the plinth level. For a clear understanding.

    You can very easily download SOR for any district from the internet.

    You can use any BIM (Building Information Modelling) software for quantities take-off. this will give you very precise results. and this is also a very demanding field to work. the software you can use is Autocad, Revit, Tekla, Slack, etc these are very informative software if you need to just get an idea of the quantity, you can use Autocad only.

    Ther are other software like CANDY which is dedicated to estimation and quantity survey.

    Coming to Time estimation, there are many project management software that can be used for it the most popular one is MS Project, Primavera P6. If you want an online software you can use Zoho Projects.

    Lintel Level

    When a window or door is constructed, a load of bricks above it needs a base. And lintels are provided for the same. Above the window, a beam-like structure mostly made up of concrete (Structural wall) is constructed. the length of this beam can limit to slightly more than the length of the window or it can exceed to cover the whole wall and can act as a lintel beam. the height where the lintel beam is constructed is called lintel level

    Sill level

    The sill level are similar to the lintel level but it is constructed below the window and its length is the same as the length of the window only. the height at which this sill is constructed is called the sill level.
