Soil reinforcement is a way to increase the strength and stiffness of soil.
In old ways, it used to reduce soil erosion at marshy land and river boundary sand.
It is done by placing a bio-fabric i.e, bamboo, in the pattern of the network in soil with a mixture of aggregate-sand to make it stiff and compacted mass.
These bio-fabric acts as a reinforcement and resist tensile stresses, which ultimately reduce erosion.
But, This technique does not give satisfactory results as compared to modern retaining Structures made of concrete.

In simple terms, soil reinforcement is a technique used to improve the stiffness and strength of soil using geo-engineering methods. It is particularly useful in areas with soft soil as it cannot provide adequate support to any construction or building. This method is adopted where the soil strata is weak and soil is susceptible.

Soil reinforcement by fiber material is considered an effective ground improvement method.

Thank you.

Soil reinforcement is generally carried out in a case where the soil is loose or soft and of low shear strength.
Thus, with the help of this technique, we can increase the engineering property of soil such as shear strength, bearing capacity, reduction in permeability, reduction in compressibility, etc.
There are various techniques for soil reinforcement such as by
– geotextiles
– soil nailing
– fiber reinforcement
So, with the help of soil reinforcement, we can make more durable, stable, and free from the settlement.

Soil reinforcement is a process of improving soil stability against slope failure.
Basically geogrid is used as reinforcement in soil stabilization
Various type of geogrid is classified as:
Best on stretching
Geogrid is widely used in canal embankment, highway embankment and soil slope stabilization.

Soil r/f is the act of improving soil strength to enable its support & to carry more load.
Two common eg’s are
Mixing a soil amendment such as lime into weak clayey soil & re-compacting to improve soil-bearing capacity.
Installing plastic or composite webbing layers (called geogrids material) alternating with compacting soil to produce a stronger sloped soil structure is also an eg for soil r/f.
