Can a random rubble masonry retaining wall withstand the high impact of water during floods, if the walls are built on both sides of a canal. And how can we check if the design of the wall was sufficient?

    You start asking about ‘High Impact’ from flood waters. Generally flood waters is not High Impact unless a dam collapses or you have an extreme flash flood. Usually if you are at a canal you will have fast water eroding the base of the wall or pushing the rubble masonry wall as the water goes through the canals.

    To check if the design of the wall is sufficient see if any design calculations were filed with the local municipality or water agency. The calcs should identify the design water speed and height. If no calcs then you need an engineer to review the construction of the wall.

    If you can’t afford an engineer first look at the base of the wall. Is there exposed dirt, is erosion already occurring? Look for photos from a few years ago to see if the wall has changed. Check the upstream ends of the walls on both sides. Are they flared out and do they extend below grade into the earth. If the rubble is just on the surface at the upstream then as the fast water rises it will undermine the wall and it will fail one piece at a time.

    A random rubble masonry wall can survive a flood if correctly designed but the only way to know for sure is to have another engineer review the wall.

    Usually a RR retaining wall is constructed in embankments (above the linings) of canal when the lateral force from the soil behind is considerably high due to various factors. During the floods, this force will exert more pressure. If the slope and base width of the wall is not designed properly, it will fail. Hence the design parameters should include this eventuality. (Max. Lateral pressure with a minimum factor of safety 1.50). Sometimes there is no need for cement mortar and the tiny gaps will be help full to act as weep holes.

    The rate analysis varies from place to place & it depends on the cost of construction material as well as labor cost. Roughly, we can say Ru. 134 per Cft. Required when PCC of 1:4:8 is used.

    All the 5 are positioning system used for navigation purpose. The different positioning system is originated from different countries. the positioning system you mentioned belongs to different countries and because of that names are different.

    • GPS(GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM) is made by the United States.
    • QZSS(QUASI-ZENITH SATELLITE SYSTEM). It is made by Japanese.
    • BEIDOU(1 & 2) -it is a satellite navigation system of China.
    • GALILEO– this is a European positioning system which is divided into three parts i.e space, ground, the user.
    • GLONASS– it is a Russian version of the positioning system has five versions till now.

    From my view M.Tech will be the best option after B.Tech because it holds many job opportunities with it. A candidate can get job easily in research and development organizations, manufacturing firms, and IT companies as project manager, Research Associate and Senior Engineers.

    The experimental results show that an optical fiber can be easily combined with concrete and that the POF could provide a steady light transmitting ratio. Moreover, the FBG can be used as a sensing element for strain and temperature.

    I am a researcher in nanotechnology and its uses in construction fields. In simple words,” The technology which works with nanoscale is called nanotechnology”. In Civil engineering, if we can work on nanoscale, i.e. 0 to 10 nanometer, and able to change the molecular properties of cement, then that modified cement concrete is called nano-engineered cement concrete.  Nowadays, it is possible to alter the cement properties according to our use.

    1. i.e. increasing workability without increasing water content.
    2. Increasing setting time without adding any admixtures.
    3. Increasing strength without and additives. etc

    Jamb and corbel are two different technical terms used in masonry.


    The difference in between jam and corbel are discussed below;

    1) Definition:

    • Jamb– A finished vertical sides of the opening of Window or door is called as a jamb.
    • corbel- A supporting a stone projecting outside from the wall is called a corbel.

    2) Function:

    • Jamb– jamb is provided at the recess to receive the frames of doors and frames of Windows
    • Corbel– corbel is provided to give support to joist, truss and weather shed.

    • Jamb has two types:
    1. Plane jamb
    2. Splayed jamb

    • Mostly Corbel is moulded to give ornamental treatment to the structure.
    • The corbel should be extended at least two-thirds of their length into the wall hence they can’t overturn out of the wall.
