What is meant by Skin Reinforcement?

Skin reinforcement is also known as side facing reinforcement which is provided in a beam when the depth of the beam exceeds 750mm, or when there exists torsion in the beam, these reinforcement is provided for beams having depths greater than 450mm.
Skin reinforcement is designed on the sides of deep beams to limit the formation of flexural crack widths.

Skin reinforcement is the secondary side face reinforcement provided when the depth of the section exceeds 750 mm.
As per IS 456, it is a minimum of 0.1% of the Gross CS area and should be provided equally on both the faces of the beam.
