When the depth of the beam exceeds 750mm,Side facing reinforcement also called skin reinforcement is provided in a beam

The side facing r/f, also called Skin r/f is installed in a beam when the depth of beam is more than 750mm or when torsion is present in it, these r/f are provided when the depth is more than 450mm of the beam. The main job is to prevent the stirrups from buckling.

Skin reinforcement is nothing but reinforcement which have lens cover and function of skin reinforcement is to prevent cracking due to various forces like shrinkage, bending, weathering action, etc
Basically, small diameter and smaller spacing Steel grade are used for skin reinforcement. Skin reinforcement is basically provided at the big column, deep beam, shear wall, cavity wall, water tank, etc

Skin reinforcement is the secondary side face reinforcement provided when the depth of the section exceeds 750 mm.
As per IS 456, it is a minimum of 0.1% of the Gross CS area and should be provided equally on both the faces of the beam.

Skin reinforcement is also known as side facing reinforcement which is provided in a beam when the depth of the beam exceeds 750mm, or when there exists torsion in the beam, these reinforcement is provided for beams having depths greater than 450mm.
Skin reinforcement is designed on the sides of deep beams to limit the formation of flexural crack widths.

To safeguard against crack formation, skin reinforcement is designed on the side faces of deep beams to limit the formation of flexural crack widths. Though the principal function of skin reinforcement is to control crack width, it may be employed for providing bending resistance of the section.
