Notwithstanding the size of a construction organization, there are just a few principal reasons that cause the lags in construction quality. And these are the same reasons that lead to safety issues as well.
Giving heed to the following four quadrants of quality control can result in a safer, more profitable, and more efficient construction workflow within a short duration.
1. Planning
Quality control requires a thorough plan that puts down exactly what the contract and customer calls for and how the contractor will ensure that the work is done as per the requirements.
A clear distribution of responsibilities between the subcontractors and skilled trade providers is important for a quality control plan that can be used later to defend against claims of neglect.
Haphazard planning is also the major cause of scope creep, which can lead to quality-related issues if work is done in a rushed manner, and shortcuts are taken to accommodate a limited budget.
2. Oversight
Independent testing and external auditing are essential to keep the construction quality in check. Even the best contractors and project managers can make mistakes that may lead to hidden quality issues.
A third-party auditor unfamiliar with the work has a better chance of finding issues that could lead to contract violations and lawsuits. Independent reviews help detect the problems while rework is still viable and affordable; and before serious accidents occur.
3. Communication
Communication breakdown or miscommunication between the construction parties quickly leads to quality loss. When lapsed documents are combined with inaccurate RFPs (request for proposal) and communication delays, it is easy to understand how the wrong materials get ordered and measurements end up switched around.
Researches show that construction workers lose an equivalent of two days per week trying to work out the communication issues between the different tiers of an organization. An improved communication, along with the application of right construction productivity tools, can enhance quality across the board.
4. Training and Labor
The scarcity of skilled labor affecting the construction sector globally is not helping the construction quality either. Even when new materials and techniques are pushed into the market, a lack of awareness results in trivial mistakes during construction that add up to heavy losses later.
If firms fail to find reliable workers that can spot mistakes and remedy them on the go, they need to consider setting up their own training programs to skill up the workforce to make them competent in the industry.
