    – Pre-tensioned concrete
    – Bonded Post-tensioned concrete
    – Unbonded Post-tensioned concrete

    The three types of members in prestressed concrete are as follows:-

    1. Neither allowing tension nor crack.
    2. Allowing tension within permissible stress but cracking is not allowed.

    The fineness of cement is a measure of the size of particles of cement and is expressed in terms of the specific surface area of cement.     The fineness of cement is a measure of the size of particles of cement and is expressed in terms of the specific surface area of cement. The fineness of cement is measured as the % weight retained on a 90µm IS sieve over the total weight of the sample. In the laboratory, the fineness of cement is tested by sieving and by the determination of a specific surface. For ordinary cement, the weight of residue left on the sieve shall not exceed 10%. The fineness of cement is the significant factor affecting the rate of hydration, rate of gain of strength, setting time, and rate of evolution of heat. The rate of strength development increases with fineness. Since the specific surface area is inversely proportional to the size of the particle, the surface area is more for finer cement than for a coarser cement. Therefore, the finer the cement, the higher the surface area for hydration and hence faster the development of strength.

    Smaller cement particles react much quicker than the larger particles. A cement particle with a diameter of 1 µm will react entirely in 1 day, whereas the particle with a diameter of 10µm takes about 1 month. It is found that the particle size fraction below 3 microns affects one day’s strength and 3 to 25-micron fraction influence the 28 days’ strength. Setting time decreases with an increase in the fineness of the cement. Too much smaller particles in cement results in quick setting, thereby leaving no time for mixing, handling, and placing. Also, such cement is susceptible to air set and early deterioration. To increase the setting time of cement, it must be manufactured in a different range of particle sizes.

    Important: Additives are added to the cement and not the admixture.

    The ceiling height of public and industrial buildings are larger than residential buildings, due to various reasons like the people traffic, ventilation purposes and for easy operation in case of industries.

    The minimum height of public buildings and industrial buildings is 3.6m.

    Mathematically, poissons ratio is equal to the negative of the ratio of lateral strain and longitudinal strain. Therefore, if the poisson’s ratio is greater than the strength is greater.

    The reason why micro-cracks occur in concrete even before loading is because of the Interfacial Transition Zone.

    The interfacial transition zone is the weakest link in the concrete. It is caused by the formation of a water film around the aggregate surface. When concrete is mixed, the water forms a film around the aggregate, and as a result, the water-cement ratio near that aggregate increases. A high water-cement ratio means less strength.

    This water film hinders the hydration reaction and results in a porous network of hydrated products. This porous network is much weaker than the bulk mortar. Therefore, even small changes in temperature cause differential movement of the material in the concrete. Differential movement occurs due to the difference in the porosity of the hydrated products.

    As a result, the micro-cracks are formed. They are formed even without the application of loads.

The process of measuring the thickness of the concrete cover in structures was noted by the beginning of the corrosion, as the lack of concrete cover thickness increased the corrosion rate for corrosion as a result of chlorides or carbonation, where it expedited the propagation inside the concrete, causing the speed of steel corrosion as well as the lack of cover helps the propagation of moisture and oxygen, which are form the main basis for the corrosion process.
