    Basic difference is retaining wall is designed to resist backfill earth pressure and breast wall is resist for natural earthen slope of hilly area

    In hill. When road is construct, at that time we need to cut-off some portion of hill and basically we construct two wall one is breast wall which is on hill side of the road to give stability of hill slop and another one is retaining wall which is construct on valley side of road which wall have backfill pressure plus road pressure on backfill so we need to design retaining wall for that backfill & surcharge .

    In technical terms, Above the Water table, Pressure exerted by water on retaining wall = 0.5 K.H^2 K = coefficient of earth pressure H= vertical height of wall. Total stress = effective stress + pore water pressure. Earth pressure due to soil: Total stress = effective stress.  

    In technical terms,

    Above the Water table,

    The design and detailing details of wall construction depend on many factors such as its purpose, type and amount of load on it, its support conditions, types of soils, etc. Unless these details are known, the sectional details can not be accurate or as required.

    The opening shape may be hexagonal, rectangular, circular, etc.

    Due to opening in web we get some benifit

    • Saving in material
    • Lighter weight
    • Due to increased depth allowed, we get more strengthen beam
