Concrete degradation may have various causes and reasons. It can be damaged by factors like fire, alkali – aggregate reaction expansion, sea water effects, bacterial corrosion, calcium leaching, physical and chemical damage from carbonation, corrosion of reinforcements and many others.

Corrosion of reinforcing steel and other embedded metals is the leading cause of deterioration of concrete. When steel corrodes, the resulting rust occupies a greater volume than the steel. This expansion creates tensile stresses in the concrete, which can eventually cause cracking, delamination, and spalling.

Main Causes of Concrete Deterioration Are:
1. Corrosion of Rebars or Other Embedded Metals
2. Freezing and Thawing
3. Chemical Attack
4. Alkali-Aggregate Action
5. Abrasion or Erosion of Concrete Surfaces
6. Fire and Heat Action
7. Volume Changes
