Membrane curing of concrete is a method of curing a concrete usually in pavements by which a material in liquid form is sprayed over the exposed surface shortly after the concrete is finished after which the material solidifies and becomes essentially impervious and thus hold the mixing water in the concrete so that it can hydrate the cement over a period of time.

Membrane curing of concrete. In some places where there is an acute shortage of water, water curing may not be possible for reasons of economy. We know that curing of concrete is done, as water added in the concrete gets evaporated after being placed. If water curing is not possible, covering with a membrane will effectively seal off the evaporation of water from concrete. However, a small amount of water is sprayed before covering with the membrane. There are a large number of sealing compounds developed in recent years. Some of the common materials used are bituminous compounds, polyethylene or polyester film, waterproof paper, rubber compounds, etc.. Initially, the bituminous compound was being used for this purpose as bituminous compound is black in color, it absorbs heat from the concrete when converted to the top surface of the concrete. This results in the increase of temperature in the body of concrete, which is undesirable. Thus are the modified materials, which are not black in color, came in use. However, bituminous compound coated with lime is being used as limewash prevents heat absorption. To obtain the best results, a small amount of water is sprayed before covering with the membrane, normally 2 or 3 coats may be required for effective sealing of the surface to prevent the evaporation of water. The reason for large use of membrane curing is due to increase in volume of construction, shortage of water, need for conservation of water, increase in cost of labor and availability of effective curing compounds. Membrane curing is commonly preferred for curing canal lining, sloping roofs and textured surface of concrete pavements. In case of waterproofing, paper or polyethylene film are used as the membrane, sufficient care must be taken to see there is no puncture. In membrane curing, it should be checked that whether adequate lapping is given at the junction and these labs are effectively sealed.

Membrane Curing is generally used to cure concrete in highway construction.
A membrane is formed that helps to retain moisture in the concrete slab. Otherwise, the moisture will get evaporated from the concrete.
Membrane curing compounds are used, which makes a layer. Bituminised water evidence papers, wax emulsions, bitumen emulsions, and plastic films are of its normally used.
The wetted solid surface is covered by a layer of waterproof material, which is stayed in touch with the concrete surface of seven days.
Focal points –
This technique doesn’t bother with constant supervision.
It is used as an advantage at places where water isn’t available inadequate amount for Wet Curing.
Disservices –
Isn’t that effective as compared to wet restoring because of the fact that the rate of hydration is less?

Membrane curing is a type of curing where a membrane is applied on the surface of the concrete to retain the moisture inside the concrete. It is mostly used in pavements.
The membranes are of two types
However both the membranes are effective for a period of 28 days. i.e the curing period

The water added to the concrete according to the mix design is well and enough for the complete hydration of the concrete. But due to the loss of moisture and excess heat of hydration, water is lost. To compensate for this water loss, we go for curing.
Membrane curing is a type of curing used for highway projects, bridges, etc.
In this, a thin membrane is applied on to the surface of the concrete. This membrane inhibits the loss of moisture, thus sealing all the water in the concrete within the layer. This layer serves its purpose until the end of the curing period, i.e., 28 days. Therefore there is no need to monitor the concrete during the curing period continuously. In addition to this, most of the membranes have a reflective property that would reflect the sunlight and thus keeping the surface and beneath cool.
This membrane retains about 95% of the moisture of the concrete.

Membrane curing is one of the methods of curing that is adopted when there is a scarcity of water. The method generally adopted on the pavement.
In this method, membrane compounds such as bituminous emulsion, wax compound, waterproof paper, etc. are used.
The basic principle:
– the water used in the hydration process can be evaporated under atmospheric conditions.
Thus, to reduce this effect, the curing compound is sprayed to surface as a coating, which will help to keep moisture sufficient for hydration.
