An embankment refers to a volume of earthen material that is placed and compacted for the purpose of raising the grade of a roadway (or railway) above the level of the existing surrounding ground surface. Highway embankments made of heavy materials are often built over soft ground and this can sometimes leads to settlement and instability of the embankment.

Sites of Special Scientific Interest give legal protection to the best sites for wildlife and geology in England and Wales. They are the areas of land that Natural England Resources Wales designate as being of special interest because of their flora, geological or physiographical features, such as wetlands, rivers, meadows, beaches and peat bogs.

The consideration must be made are as follows :-

– Proper planning should be done.
– The approval should be needed.
– Land should be surveyed and all the test should be performed.
