There are two types of Tiles used in bathrooms

    a) Bathroom wall tiles

    b) Bathroom floor tiles

Let’s take about bathroom floor tiles

Bathroom floor tiles are primarily used for 2 purposes, one they should have antiskid properties, two they should help reducing water swepage.

In addition to that, you have to give a slope in the bathroom floor, so the water don’t get stagnant on the floor itself. A recommended slope of 1 inch per feet is required, so all the water from the floor reaches the drain outlet. This will make your bathroom floor dry quickly.

Will choosing bathroom floor tiles, avoid glossy or polished tiles, as they are slippery in nature. And with water on top of it, you are asking for trouble. A matt, or rustic finish tile is highly recommend for bathrooms.

    Now about bathroom wall tiles,

Tiles are primarily used in bathrooms to cover all the plumbing and electric lines, Criss crossing across the bathroom.

And then it also prevents, fungi, algae, germs, so it is hygienic in nature.

Also the colour & shade does not get changed even with years of using of cleaning agents and acid. So maintenance is simple and easy.

The choice of tiles used in bathrooms is unlimited, and there are various tiles sizes, colours, textures, punches, highlighters, shades, grains.

It is your absolute personal choice as they come in all sizes and colours and also in various budget. But now a days 2 X 1 sizes are in trend for bathrooms. It will a apt size for Indian bathrooms. And it gives the best look by the dimensions. Floor you can use a matching 1 X 1 tile or a 2 X 2 tile too…

I added some technical points about Chrome corundum bricks

    • It is a new excellent grade refractory materials with a very high-temperature performance with strong corrosion resistance and high strength which is made up of chromium oxide and for corundum as a raw material which is mixed with some other additives.

    Chemical composition:

    Al2O3 —.   >92

    CaO.        <1.2

    SiO.          <1.0

    Fe2O3.     <0.3

    Cr2O7.     >3

    Properties:

    Cold crushing strength >180 MPa

    porosity.        >15%

    Bulk density. > 3.25 g/cm^3

Modulus of rupture. > 9.5 MPa

    Applications:

    1. It is fire-resistant properties
    2. Strength in the range between 70 to 100 MPa.
    3. High resistance against thermal shocks
    4. Resistance against slag erosion

    Hi.

First of all, it’s a common problem. This kind of erratic workmanship often happens and there are ways to correct it although none will guarantee perfection as much as properly aligned coloumns. The site supervisor should have not allowed this to happen in the first place but now there’s no choice left to him.

Firstly, it is bending moment development you must be worried about more than shear. If not taken care of the eccentricity would have given rise to additional bending moments especially at the critical locations adding up to bending stresses. But, don’t panic. All building codes provide a factor of safety against these things in colomn design though I don’t know the exact number in the Phillipino code. If it’s an eccentricity of a few inches or less than 5%, then you need not worry much and trust the contractor. He must be providing crank bars in the longitudinal reinforcement after bending the bars which is the most common technique. You can see it in the image below.

It would be very costly and also time consuming to replace the entire colomn. Especially, when the floor slab has been constructed it’s nearly impossible. If the eccentricity is large enough, you should get an expert opinion from an experienced engineer by taking him to site. There are other methods apart from crank bar too.

Also, the adjustment regarding crank bars also requires additional processes like drilling, putting additional shear reinforcement which I can’t exactly tell. You must talk to the contractor or engineers regarding that.

Lastly, don’t go willy-nilly with my answer only. It’s there so you get an idea of what’s going on. I haven’t seen the site so I have only limited information. Best would be to have an engineer look at it at the site.

To safeguard against crack formation, skin reinforcement is designed on the side faces of deep beams to limit the formation of flexural crack widths. Though the principal function of skin reinforcement is to control crack width, it may be employed for providing bending resistance of the section.
